Chiller replacement in Sydney: what to know
Many Sydney towers still run chillers installed in the 1990s and 2000s, some on R22 or older refrigerants. Replacing them is often part of lifting a NABERS rating, and a modern chiller can use far less power at part load.
Lifting plant into a CBD or North Sydney tower usually means a large crane, council permits and a weekend road closure. Winter is the usual changeover window, so the planning, selection and ordering need to start the year before.
We take enquiries from the Sydney CBD, North Sydney, Parramatta, Macquarie Park, the Inner West, the Hills, the Shire and Greater Western Sydney, and from Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast.
When replacement makes sense
- The chiller is 20 to 25 years old or more and repair costs are climbing
- It runs on R22, which is no longer imported for new equipment and is costly to service
- The same compressor or component keeps failing
- Energy use is high or the building has a NABERS rating to improve
- The building load has changed and the chiller is now too big or too small
What a replacement involves
- Site survey and load review, so the new chiller is sized to the building as it is now
- Selection: air-cooled or water-cooled, compressor type, refrigerant and efficiency at part load
- Access planning: crane lifts, road closures, roof or basement access
- Removal of the old chiller, including recovery of the refrigerant
- Installation, pipework, electrical and integration with your BMS
- Commissioning, handover and a maintenance plan
Questions
Can a chiller replacement help our NABERS rating?
Often, yes. Chillers are one of the biggest energy users in an office building. A specialist can estimate the energy saving from a new chiller as part of the quote.
What does Chiller Connect cost?
Nothing. The specialist quotes you directly and you decide whether to go ahead. If you do, the contractor pays us a referral fee. It is never added to your quote as a separate line.
