Chiller repair in Perth: what to know
Perth summers bring long runs of hot, dry days near or above 40°C. Air-cooled chillers are common in Perth, and on those days they work at the edge of their limits, so high head pressure trips and condenser fan failures are among the most common callouts.
We take repair enquiries from the CBD, West Perth, Osborne Park, Fremantle and the wider metro area, and from regional Western Australia.
We take enquiries from the Perth CBD, West Perth, Subiaco, Osborne Park, Fremantle and the wider metropolitan area, and from Mandurah, Bunbury, the Pilbara.
Common chiller faults
Most breakdowns fall into a handful of patterns. The fault code on the chiller controller usually tells a technician which one before they arrive.
- High head pressure trips: fouled condenser coils or tubes, failed condenser fans, or a cooling tower problem on water-cooled plant.
- Low pressure or low refrigerant trips: usually a refrigerant leak that needs finding and repairing before recharging.
- Flow switch trips: a pump fault, blocked strainer, closed valve or air in the chilled water or condenser water loop.
- Freeze protection trips: low water temperature or low flow through the evaporator.
- Compressor faults: overloads, oil problems, bearing failures, and bearing or drive faults on magnetic-bearing compressors.
- Controller, sensor and VSD faults: a failed sensor or drive can stop an otherwise healthy machine.
What to send with your enquiry
The more the technician knows up front, the more likely they arrive with the right parts.
- Make, model and serial number from the chiller nameplate
- The fault code or alarm shown on the controller (a photo is fine)
- Air-cooled or water-cooled, and how many chillers are on site
- What the building is and what the chiller serves
- When the problem started and anything that changed before it
Questions
Why does my chiller trip on the hottest days?
On very hot days an air-cooled chiller struggles to reject heat. Dirty condenser coils, a failed fan or a low refrigerant charge then push the head pressure past its limit and the chiller trips to protect itself. A technician can find which one it is.
